The purpose of a Gutter and Downspout system is to collect rainwater from the roof and direct it away from the building foundation by means of downspouts, splash blocks, or underground drain lines.

The standard size for residential dwellings is 5" K-Style gutter.  A larger size or 6" K-Style gutter is used for larger roof and commercial buildings.  Half-Round gutters are typically sized 1 inch wider than K-Style gutters to provide the equivalent capacity.  Half-Round gutter in "MOST" cases are not seamless.  They are usually available in 20' lengths.

Downspout diameters are sized according to the roof area they drain.  A rule of thumb used in the industry is that 2x3 inch downspout will suffice for 600 sq. ft. roof; and a 3x4 inch downspout for 1200 sq. ft. roof. The typical downspout size for 5 inch K-Style gutter is 2x3 inch and 3x4 inches for 6 inch K-Style gutter. Vertical downspout are used to capture and distribute rain water to storm drainage system, or by means of splash blocks, to areas away from building's foundation walls to prevent build-up of water in the soil and possibly resulting structural or basement moisture problems.  Downspouts are typically rectangular and of the same materials as the gutter to prevent destructive galvanic actions.

An improperly functioning gutter and downspout system can contribute to water and ice backing up against fascia, under roof shingles, can damage soffits, and discolor or deteriorate siding materials.  Faulty gutters and downspouts can also lead to soil erosion adjacent to buildings and serious foundations displacement problems in basements and crawl spaces. Gutters should be slopped a minimum of 1/2 inch to 1 inch every 30-40 feet of run, standing water may indicate a sagging or incorrectly pitched gutter.

Unfortunately, gutter system take more abuse from extreme weather conditions, particularly ice and snow, than any other component of the building envelope.  They are also subject to damage from ladders and being stepped on, as well as from falling tree limbs and debris.  In heavy snow areas, snow guards can be used to prevent gutter tear off.

Gutters are often sized according to the roof area they drain.  Wider gutters may be required for certain hard surface roofing materials, such as slate tile, or used on steeply-pitched roofs, to prevent water from shooting over the gutter.  Gutters should be positioned tight against fascia to prevent water from going behind your system.  

Before 1960, most gutters were made of wood or metal with a "Half-Round" shape.  During the 60's, roll-formed metal gutter technology was introduced that allowed metal gutters to be made lighter, and less expensive.  Initially available in galvanized steel.  Today the roll formed gutters are now available in COPPER, ALUMINUM, GALVALUME, and PAINTED STEEL.  When first developed the portable roll forming equipment, we now call it gutter machine, were described as Seamless Roll Formers.  The description came from the idea that a standard size roll of Aluminum Gutter Coil could from approximately 1000 feet of gutter at one time.  As no residence had need for any gutter that long, the term seamless was coined.

Both surfaces of continuous gutter have meticulously controlled coating of thermally set polyester acrylic paint applied before they are roll formed.  The inside surface is coated with the same finish applied at 10% of the face coat thickness.  This is applied to provide a "buffer" between the layers of aluminum as they are coiled to protect the sheen of the outside coat.  This coat has a high modulus of expansion, which allows it to be stretched drastically before it fails.  The aluminum sheet still shows no sign of missing paint as it is rolled through the machine at the job site.

The principal reason aluminum gutters are popular, is because ALUMINUM does no RUST!  Aluminum has the property that when it does oxide,(rust), the oxide forms a a protective coating to prevent further oxidation.

If during a rainfall, you can hear the water slapping the ground, pouring over the sides of the gutter, there may be a blockage or the gutter itself may not be aligned evenly. If you notice paint peeling or corroded wood, the gutter is most likely clogged and is causing the water to overflow and run down the back of gutter along the exterior walls of the house. If you notice mold or if you see puddles of water forming around the outside of your house it’s a sure sign that there are drainage problems.

Can I install gutters on my own?

 Certainly, if you are a regular do-it-yourselfer and are comfortable on a ladder, you can install sectional gutters, but you’ll need a qualified professional to install seamless gutters.

 If you’re considering installing a new gutter system or replacing an old one, the cost will be a big factor. Often this is determined by the material you choose and how much gutter you need for your home. 

How Long Do Gutters Last?

With proper care and maintenance, most gutters should last for about 20 years without needing a replacement. Copper gutters are known for their longevity, with most not needing a replacement for 50 years. 

How Often Do I Clean My Gutters?

 The task most often associated with gutters is, of course, cleaning. Getting debris like leaves and twigs out of your gutter is extremely important. A clogged gutter can cause damage to your roof or a leak inside of your home when it rains. Not to mention, it presents a fire hazard during dry conditions. It’s recommended that you clean your gutters at least twice a year, in spring and fall. You may need to do so more frequently if your gutters are located close to trees or after a heavy storm. How Can I Tell If My Gutters Aren’t Working?

 Unless you see the damage, you likely don’t think about your gutters very often. One of the best ways to tell if gutters are working is by doing an inspection. It’s best to do so after you’ve cleaned your gutters. Check the downspouts and seams for separation or cracks. Make sure everything is aligned. If you notice something that seems out of place, be sure to contact a contractor.

Another thing you'll want to observe is peeling paint. This can be a sign that there's an issue.
